Death from records of Jonathan Perkins of Pittsfield, NH "June 14 1812, decon walos died"
Northwood Cemetery book gives probable burial in the Jonathan Knowlton #62 Cemetery, where only fieldstones remain. Information given as follows:
Lieut. William Wallace 1740-1812
Molly (Brown) wife ? ?
From research of M. Hollick:
William5 WALLIS was born 1740-1742, and baptized at Greenland in 1742 as William son of William [Greenland VRs, p. 86]. He was the son of William4 (Samuel3 William2) and Comfort (Cotton) Wallis. He died at Pittsfield Jun 14, 1812 [Jonathan Perkins Book of Deaths in Pittsfield, manuscript at the New Hampshire Historical Society]. He bought 50 acres in Epsom from his brother Samuel on 25 June 1760 [NHPD 63:182] and was noted as "of Hampton." William, now of North Hampton, yeoman, sells that land on 2 July 1767 to Thomas Ward. [NHPD 80:299]. By 2 January 1771 he was of Nottingham with wife Mary when he again sells to his brother Samuel land in Epsom [Rockingham Deeds 104:72]. By 22 June 1786 he was in Deerfield, when he sold land there to William Pickering. [Rockingham Deeds 121:427]. On 14 November 1787, he was of Northwood when he sold land there to Timothy Caswell of Barrington. [Rockingham Deeds 123:282]. In the 1790 census, he is still at Northwood with a household of three men over 16; two under 16 and 3 women. He is listed next to Moses Godfree (sic).
William is the first Wallis for whom we have no definitive accounting of his family via primary documents. He leaves no will and his administration papers only name his son John, an unnamed widow, and son-in-law William Knowlton. Administration was transferred from son John to William Knowlton since John contended that it was a burden because he lived at a distance. The inventory of his estate was first taken on 13 October 1812 and amounted to $147.99. His land was sold, debts paid, and the final accounting of his estate was made on 23 August 1813 and amounted to $185.16 which was left to be distributed to his heirs and widow. Sadly, no distribution survives. Because the property was sold, there are no deeds between heirs to quitclaim their interests. The Deerfield and Northwood vital records do not start early enough to include this family.
We must therefore, piece together his family by deduction. J.M. Moses' gives this man but one sentence in his Early Settlers of Epsom and the same one sentence in his Boston Evening Transcript account of the family. However, he gives a much more detailed account in his article, "Early Settlers of East Northwood" The Granite Monthly Vol. XLIX (1917):37-39. He gives William's wife as Mary, and children as Comfort who married Joshua Atwood, Molly who married William Knowlton, William who married Betsy Drew then a Comstock, Sarah who married a Joseph Morrill, Anna who married Silas Burnham as his second wife, Abigail who married Josiah Sanborn, Betsy who married Edmund Sanborn, and John who married Phebe Rand. He then adds that Moses is a possible son. Based on J.M. Moses's recounting of the family several, if not all, left New Hampshire for either Vermont or Maine. The only other source of information on this family is from Langdon Parsons' History of Rye. He recounts that William married Molly Brown and removed to Northwood. He then lists children: William m. first unknown m. 2nd Comstock; Moses m. Susan Lucas; John m. Phebe Rand; Mary m. William Knowlton; Comfort m. Atwood; Sally m. Sanborn; Nancy m. Silas Burnham; Betsey m. Edward Sanborn; and a dau. who m. Morrill.
These two accounts can be corroborated that, indeed, William had a wife Mary (Molly is a diminutive form of Mary); he had a son John who married Phebe Rand; he had a son-in-law William Knowlton; and a Deerfield marriage shows Comfort who married Joshua Atwood on 19 December 1780 . It makes sense that William named a daughter after his mother. Then there is the usual confusion of names and people. Edward Sanborn is Edmund Sanborn. Sally (or Sarah) married a Morrill not a Sanborn, etc. I leave it to the reader whether or not to trust Moses and/or Parsons in their assertions.
So the reconstruction of this family must remain somewhat tentative. Clearly, William leaves Deerfield by 1787 and then resides in Nottingham and Northwood. He is certainly the only Wallis who does live in either of those two places. However, two other Wallis families are in Deerfield at the same time: Joseph5 (Samuel4 William3) and George4 (Samuel3). If all the members of his household were parents and children in the 1790 census, he had four sons and two daughters then (plus he and his wife). That's one more son than Parsons accounts for and two more than J.M. Moses (unless you count Moses Wallace definitively instead of tentatively). One more source must be checked that are not available at the NEHGS library. J.M. Moses extracted the vital records of Northwood (at the New Hampshire Historical Society).
William married first say 1760, Mary BROWN, whose parentage is unknown. She was born say 1740 and died before 1785 when it must be this William who married at Deerfield on 14 October 1785 , Mary GODFREY. It is she who is alive on 23 August 1813 according to William's probate papers.
