Baptised July 5, 1753, twin to Richard.
A family burying ground lying on the westerly side of said road adjoining land of William Howe. The burial ground is not mentioned in later deeds, and a story said a barn was built over it. Apparently George had built a house next to his father on two acres his father sold him in 1859 on the northerly corner of his barn.
William Rand was born in Rye, NH where he was baptized July 5, 1753, son of William and Elizabeth (Hodgkins) Rand. He married at Rye in 1773, Sarah Rand, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Dowst) Rand. He and Samuel Rand bought land in Epsom in 1774, and was in Epsom to sign the Association Test. His homestead was in the area of Lazy River on Goboro Road. His children are listed in the old town books as: William 1774, Olive 1776, Molly 1779, Sarah 1781, Barkey 1783, Tobias T. 1785, Thomas 1787 and Betsy Wood, 1790. In a story written by his grandson Samuel G., that late in life "he went to a neighbor one day, the path through the woods was by spot trees, It snowed, and on his return he could not see the spot trees. He lost his way and wandered about int he woods all night, froze both legs and had them taken off just below the knees. he was a large powerful man."

Biographies/Obituaries
Stephen Rand, Jr.
Stephen Rand, Jr., was born May 11, 1844, in Norwich, Vt., the son of Stephen and Rebecca Rand. In 1850 the family was living in Hanover, NH, and in 1860, age 17, he was a student at Dartmouth College.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, in his 2nd year of college, he left to enlist in Company E, 1st U.S. Sharpshooters on August 15, 1861. He was discharged for disability on April 13, 1863, and "for meritorious and faithful service was graduated with his class, 1863."
Rand was appointed Acting Third Assistant Engineer, U. S. Navy, on December 1864. He was ordered to duty on the sidewheel steamer Merrimac, at Portsmouth Navy Yard. Merrimac left port in early February, headed for the Gulf of Mexico, stopping at Beaufort, N.C. and Charleston, S.C. due to heavy seas. She departed Charleston on February 13, and two days later the crew was forced to abandon the storm battered ship, which sank that night.
Rand was ordered to the sidewheel gunboat Tioga, then in Portsmouth undergoing overhaul. Recommissioned in June 1865, she sailed off New England and in the Gulf of Mexico until May 1866, when she was laid up in New York.
Rand continued in the Engineer Corps until August 1869, when he was transferred to the Supply Corps, and appointed Assistant Paymaster, at Portsmouth Navy Yard.
Rand was Paymaster, in charge of accounts, for the Tehuantepec Surveying Expedition in Mexico from 1870 to 1872, and in charge of the iron-clad New Orleans in 1872.
He was promoted to Passed Assistant Paymaster on April 30, 1874, and ordered to Kearsarge, East Indies. He acted as Judge-Advocate of Asiatic Squadron, ordered to Japan, and was at Vladivostok, Siberia, with the Transit of Venus party in 1875. He was on special duty at Washington, D.C. from 1878 to 1881; on European Station, from 1881 to 1883; and back to Washington, at the Navy Department from 1883 to 1886, at the Torpedo Station.
He was promoted to Paymaster on July 31, 1884. In April 1885, he was in charge of accounts and stores of Naval and Marine force (where?). He was ordered to Aspinwall (present day Colon, Panama) on September 21, 1885, then took a special course in Analytical Chemistry, until May 1887. He was ordered to the Mohican, and served on her from 1887 to 1891. This was followed by special duty at the Navy Department from 1891 to 1983. He was Paymaster, Washington Navy Yard starting in 1893, residing at Ebbitt House. In 1898, he was Paymaster in the Navy Pay Office, 1429 New York Avenue NW.
He was promoted to Pay Inspector in September 1899.
Rand retired with the rank of Rear Admiral in 1911, and lived in Washington until his death on July 12, 1915. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery (Section W, Site 248). He was a member of the D.C. Commandery of MOLLUS.
He married Susan L. F. Watson of Philadelphia, Pa., on August 21, 1871, in Portsmouth, NH.
