General Notes: Husband - Samuel Wallace

Samuel4, WALLIS born say 1717, son of Samuel3 (William2) and Hannah (Seavey) Wallis. He died November 1793 at Rye. [The Oracle of the Day; Date: 11-09-1793, p. 3]. He married about 1743, Sarah MOSES, daughter of James3 (Aaron2 John1) and Martha (Jackson) Moses. She was born 10 September 1721 at Portsmouth [NEHGR 81:431] and was living 3 June 1772 when mentioned in her father's will as Sarah Wallis, wife of Samuel [Rockingham Probate #4517, Evans, Abstracts of Rockingham County Probate II: 649] but not mentioned in her husband's will of 16 October 1793. [Rockingham Probate #5975, Barbara Evans, Abstracts of Rockingham County Probate II:982].
After the death of his father in 1741, Samuel is consistently called the husbandman of Rye in records. This distinguishes him from his nephew, Samuel (the joiner/carpenter of Newcastle and Portsmouth), his son (Samuel Jr. of Rye) and his cousin, Samuel4 (William3). His family is also given in Kathleen E. Hosier, Vital Records of Rye, New Hampshire (Bowie, Md.: Heritage Books, 1992), p. 313, in her 1790 census section. She assigns a second wife to Samuel as widow Deborah Reeder, but there is no evidence for this.
Samuel, noted as a singleman, receives land from his father by deed on 1 June 1741 [NHPD 25:258]. He must have married about 1743 given the birth of his first child. As Samuel Wallis, husbandman of Rye he sold 10 acres in Rye to William Berry of Rye, husbandman on 2 May 1755 [NHPD 46:536]. The day before he also sold 10 acres in Rye to Jonathan Locke [NHPD 51:481]. On 28 December 1769 he sold 18 acres to Jonathan Locke, Jr. of Rye [Rockingham Deeds 102:28]. On 11 February 1771, Samuel Wallis, husbandman of Rye sold to Henry Seavey, 100 acres in Epsom, No. 111 in the fourth range of lots, being part of the original right of Deacon William Wallas, late of Rye, deceased. [Rockingham Deeds 110:73]. On 8 May 1777, Samuel sold to Samuel Wallis, Jr. of Rye, 55 acres in Rye, being the land he bought of Hannah Rand of Rye. [Rockingham Deeds 137:119]. On none of these deeds does his wife release dower rights.
As noted above he was enumerated in Rye in the 1790 census with a household of three men over 16, 2 females, and one other person. Samuel left a will dated 16 October 1793 and proved 19 February 1794. [Rockingham Probate #5975, Evans, Abstracts of Rockingham Co. Probate II:982]. He names his son Samuel and six daughters [all by just first name] of whom only Martha is unmarried [here Evans makes a mistake in her abstracts. The language of the will is clear.] Samuel wills his negro Philless (sic) to his son. She is obviously the "other person" in the 1790 census. His estate was valued at over 1100 pounds. No wife is mentioned. His children are picked up from Rye Vital Records and this will.

Notes: Marriage

Marriage by Rev. Jonathan Curtis in Epsom, reported by James Babb, town clerk.

The marriage lasted until Rice's death in 1843. His youngest children were raised by Sarah (Rice and Sarah did not have any children together), and letters from Abner Rice Jr., who was 6 years old at the time his father remarried, indicate that he thought of her as his Mama. Abner Jr. also describes his step-brother, John Girard, as "a very fine young man full of jokes and fun". Tragically, Abner Jr. drowned in 1837, aged 22, when he and a friend were trying to salvage a neighbour's canoe – an eerie parallel with the death of Sarah's first husband, Richard Locke.

Babb also records that Sarah's children, Moses and Ann Locke, were present in Epsom at the time of the wedding. An Ann Locke continues to be mentioned in the diary up until March 1823, well beyond the time when presumably Sarah and Dr. Rice returned to Montreal. Ann eventually did follow her mother. She married François Trudeau in Montreal in 1826.
