Lieut. William Wallace 1740-1812
Molly (Brown) wife ? ?
From research of M. Hollick:
William5 WALLIS was born 1740-1742, and baptized at Greenland in 1742 as William son of William [Greenland VRs, p. 86]. He was the son of William4 (Samuel3 William2) and Comfort (Cotton) Wallis. He died at Pittsfield Jun 14, 1812 [Jonathan Perkins Book of Deaths in Pittsfield, manuscript at the New Hampshire Historical Society]. He bought 50 acres in Epsom from his brother Samuel on 25 June 1760 [NHPD 63:182] and was noted as "of Hampton." William, now of North Hampton, yeoman, sells that land on 2 July 1767 to Thomas Ward. [NHPD 80:299]. By 2 January 1771 he was of Nottingham with wife Mary when he again sells to his brother Samuel land in Epsom [Rockingham Deeds 104:72]. By 22 June 1786 he was in Deerfield, when he sold land there to William Pickering. [Rockingham Deeds 121:427]. On 14 November 1787, he was of Northwood when he sold land there to Timothy Caswell of Barrington. [Rockingham Deeds 123:282]. In the 1790 census, he is still at Northwood with a household of three men over 16; two under 16 and 3 women. He is listed next to Moses Godfree (sic).
William is the first Wallis for whom we have no definitive accounting of his family via primary documents. He leaves no will and his administration papers only name his son John, an unnamed widow, and son-in-law William Knowlton. Administration was transferred from son John to William Knowlton since John contended that it was a burden because he lived at a distance. The inventory of his estate was first taken on 13 October 1812 and amounted to $147.99. His land was sold, debts paid, and the final accounting of his estate was made on 23 August 1813 and amounted to $185.16 which was left to be distributed to his heirs and widow. Sadly, no distribution survives. Because the property was sold, there are no deeds between heirs to quitclaim their interests. The Deerfield and Northwood vital records do not start early enough to include this family.
We must therefore, piece together his family by deduction. J.M. Moses' gives this man but one sentence in his Early Settlers of Epsom and the same one sentence in his Boston Evening Transcript account of the family. However, he gives a much more detailed account in his article, "Early Settlers of East Northwood" The Granite Monthly Vol. XLIX (1917):37-39. He gives William's wife as Mary, and children as Comfort who married Joshua Atwood, Molly who married William Knowlton, William who married Betsy Drew then a Comstock, Sarah who married a Joseph Morrill, Anna who married Silas Burnham as his second wife, Abigail who married Josiah Sanborn, Betsy who married Edmund Sanborn, and John who married Phebe Rand. He then adds that Moses is a possible son. Based on J.M. Moses's recounting of the family several, if not all, left New Hampshire for either Vermont or Maine. The only other source of information on this family is from Langdon Parsons' History of Rye. He recounts that William married Molly Brown and removed to Northwood. He then lists children: William m. first unknown m. 2nd Comstock; Moses m. Susan Lucas; John m. Phebe Rand; Mary m. William Knowlton; Comfort m. Atwood; Sally m. Sanborn; Nancy m. Silas Burnham; Betsey m. Edward Sanborn; and a dau. who m. Morrill.
These two accounts can be corroborated that, indeed, William had a wife Mary (Molly is a diminutive form of Mary); he had a son John who married Phebe Rand; he had a son-in-law William Knowlton; and a Deerfield marriage shows Comfort who married Joshua Atwood on 19 December 1780 . It makes sense that William named a daughter after his mother. Then there is the usual confusion of names and people. Edward Sanborn is Edmund Sanborn. Sally (or Sarah) married a Morrill not a Sanborn, etc. I leave it to the reader whether or not to trust Moses and/or Parsons in their assertions.
So the reconstruction of this family must remain somewhat tentative. Clearly, William leaves Deerfield by 1787 and then resides in Nottingham and Northwood. He is certainly the only Wallis who does live in either of those two places. However, two other Wallis families are in Deerfield at the same time: Joseph5 (Samuel4 William3) and George4 (Samuel3). If all the members of his household were parents and children in the 1790 census, he had four sons and two daughters then (plus he and his wife). That's one more son than Parsons accounts for and two more than J.M. Moses (unless you count Moses Wallace definitively instead of tentatively). One more source must be checked that are not available at the NEHGS library. J.M. Moses extracted the vital records of Northwood (at the New Hampshire Historical Society).
William married first say 1760, Mary BROWN, whose parentage is unknown. She was born say 1740 and died before 1785 when it must be this William who married at Deerfield on 14 October 1785 , Mary GODFREY. It is she who is alive on 23 August 1813 according to William's probate papers.

Notes
General:
A William Wallace and wife Alice were in Epsom by deed, 1768. Three children baptized in Epsom, two on Jan. 1, 1769 and one Aug. 9, 1770.
William4 WALLIS was baptized in 1729 [Greenland VRs, p. 73], son of William3-2 and Martha (---) Wallis. William married say 1750, Alice3 ABBOTT, daughter of Reuben2(Walter1) and Susanna (Shortridge) Abbott of Portsmouth. Alice was baptized at the South Church in Portsmouth on 28 November 1731 [NEHGR 81:419]. Both William and Alice were alive at Greenland on 13 April 1784 [Rockingham Co. Deeds 117:80].
William was quite active in land records, more so than either of his brothers, and often with his father. Rather than outline them all, I will discuss those with significance and briefly list the rest. On 13 June 1758 he received 48 acres from his father as William Wallace, Jr. of Greenland [NHPD 60:349]. He sold his pew in the meeting house to Enoch Clark on 3 October 1761 [NHPD 66:376] On 23 Feb. 1764 he and his father sell land. [NHPD 72:168]. On 7 May 1768 as William Wallis of Epsom, he sold to Ichabod Weeks of Greenland, but signed the deed William Wallis Jr. [NHPD 79:498]. He sold to Thomas Nudd of Greenland [NHPD 79:499]. He sold to Clement March of Greenland [NHPD 80:15]. He sold to Samuel and Job Chapman, with Alice releasing dower. [NHPD 89:405]. He sold with his father again to Ichabod Weeks. [NHPD 89:421]. Conversely, he bought of Eleazer and William Cate of Greenland some land "the is said Wallis's father's possession." [NHPD 91:81]. Again as William of Epsom, husbandman he sold to Ebenezer Taber, a tract in Epsom on 16 December 1768. [NHPD 97:172].
After his father's death, he is the William Wallace of Greenland, husbandman in several deeds starting on 17 April 1777 when he sold land to William Pickering of Greenland, gentleman. [Rockingham Co. Deeds 108:220]. On 11 June 1777, again to William Pickering, he sold 60 acres in Greenland it being the land I bought of William Blazo and Joseph Wallis. [Rockingham Co. Deeds 109:152] Recorded the same day, but dated 31 March 1775, is the deed from Joseph Wallace to William for 40 acres in which no relationship is stated. [Rockingham Co. Deeds 109:316] On 1 July 1771, William Wallas (his father) and William Blasdel (his brother-in-law) both of Greenland sold to William Wallis, Jr. of Greenland, 20 acres in Greenland, described in part as "to the northeast End of the farm that Mr. William Wallace gave to his Son Joseph Wallas and to this daughter Blasdel said Twenty acres to lie on the East side of the land give to Abigail Blasdel adjoining to Joseph Wallas's land. [Rockingham Co. Deeds 112:156] William bought land from Thomas and Nathaniel Marston in Portsmouth [Rockingham Co. Deeds 112:157] and sold land to them [Rockingham Co. Deeds 123:64] William sold again to William Pickering, the 40 acres "I bought of Joseph Wallis" and 12 additional acres in Portsmouth. [Rockingham Co. Deeds 116:249]
Deeds are sometimes recorded well after the date, and therefore are out of order chronologically by their volume and page number. However, in late 1783 and into 1784, William and in many cases with Alice releasing dower, sells off all his land. He trades land with Thomas Berry, Jr. [Rockingham Co. Deeds 117:80, 117:140, 117:144]. He sells and buys to William Pickering once more [Rockingham Co. Deeds 117:141, 117:143, 117:145, the last of which is the land "I bought of William Blazo and Joseph Wallis."] And then he sells land to George Lang of Greenland, cordwainer in two deeds dated 9 June 1784 and 1 May 1783, the later of which was 60 acres "it being the whole of my homestead where I now live." [Rockingham Co. Deeds 118:10 and 138:2]
And with that last deed dated 9 June 1784, both William and Alice vanish from the records. He doesn't seem to be living with his sons Reuben or William Weymouth Wallis in the 1790 census [each household has but one man over 16], nor on his own. There is no probate for either William nor Alice in the Rockingham Co. Probate files. However, given his relative age at the time (about 55) and the language of the deed, I believe he moved. I just don't know where.
There are six William Wallaces/Wallises in the 1790 census in New Hampshire. The man in Epsom is William Weymouth5 Wallace and the one in Northwood is William5-4 (Samuel3). That leaves four in Londonderry, Herkimer, Merrimac, and Cockermouth (the early name for Groton). These men seem to be from the Londonderry Scots-Irish Wallaces. One William Wallace is in Newbury, Vermont, in Orange County with a household of 15 persons including seven men over 16. Again this is not our man.
William's children are pieced together as follows: John, Jane, Simeon, and Nanny have baptisms. William Weymouth is placed here for name, age, and the fact he cannot be placed anywhere else. All the William slots in the descendants of Samuel3 are spoken for. He cannot be Samuel4 William3's child because he marries that man's daughter. Reuben is placed here for age and naming reasons (Alice's father's name was Reuben). Lastly, Benjamin is placed here due to his presence in Sandwich. Reuben moves to Sanbornton. William Weymouth moves to Sandwich. It seems likely that John also moved to Sandwich, therefore the Benjamin of Sandwich seems to fit into here as well.
The last three children are incorrectly given to Weymouth on most Internet sites. Lastly, this family is the most problematic in identification thus far, and consequently may change the most as research progresses.
