Comfort6 born say 1770, died Tunbridge, Vt. 4 June 1857. Married at Gilmanton, N.H. on 10 August 1794 [Gilmanton Vital Records, New Hampshire Genealogical Record 17 (2000):131], Stephen SMITH, born 6 January 1768 at Boxford, Massachusetts and died at Tunbridge on 29 July 1836, son of Asa and Abigail (Towne) Smith. Comfort is in the 1850 U.S. Census for Tunbridge, Vt., aged 78 (and hence born ca. 1772) in the household of Spencer Smith, aged 47. Comfort lists her birth place as Massachusetts rather than New Hampshire. Also, Internet sites give her marriage place as Gilman rather than Gilmanton. No doubt these two errors have hampered researchers in correctly identifying her.

The Tarleton Genealogy gives her parents as Joseph C. Wallace and Polly Clark, though no record of this marraige is known. The only Joseph C. Wallace in Epsom, NH was Joseph Chase Wallace, son of Samuel (who is buried in the Brown-Wallace Cemetery, New Rye, Epsom, NH). Also in this cemetery is a Comfort Wallace, born abt. 1775, died 1840 age 65. This Comfort Wallace is too old to have been the spouse of William Tarleton, though her brother is Joseph Chase Wallace, and it would not be uncommon for him to name a daughter for his sister. The Sanborn Genealogy and Epsom, NH vital records shows Joseph C. Wallace having married Mary Sanborn (dau. of Reuben) on Jan 4, 1798, four years after the birth of this Comfort Wallace, and was probably his second wife.
