New Hampshire Recorder 10-7-1790
DIED at Exeter, Mr. Spencer Wallis.
Spencer5 WALLIS born 1745 [age 30 on 3 June 1775, NHSP 14:109] and died at Exeter in October, 1790 [The New-Hampshire Recorder, and the Weekly Advertiser; Date: 10-07-1790; Page: 3], the son of William4 (Samuel3 William2) and Comfort (Cotton) Wallis. Administration to his estate was granted to his widow, Sarah on 1 June 1793 [Rockingham Co. Probate #5903, Evans, Abstracts of Rockingham Co. Probate II:977]. Spencer sells to his brother Samuel on 9 November 1769, his land in Epsom [Rockingham Co. Deeds 104:72]. He also sold land to Thomas Ward in the same year [Rockingham Co. Deeds 97:208]. Spencer bought a house in Exeter from Philip Bailey, gentleman of Portsmouth on 21 March 1771 [Rockingham Co. Deeds 96:386]. Spencer is called a shipwright in deeds and in his administration papers. He was part of Capt. Winthrop Rowe's company on 3 June 1775 and continued with that company where is again listed on 4 October 1775 at Medford, Mass. [NHSP 14:110, 133, 190]. The town of Exeter lists him as receiving a blanket after enlistment. [NHSP 16:648] Spencer appears on the petition dated 25 February 1783 for Phillips Exeter Academy [NHSP 11:666] He is listed in the 1790 census at Exeter with a household of one man over 16, one under 16 and 2 females. His inventory was valued at 90-9-5. On 3 April 1794, expenses were submitted by Sarah Wallace which states "maintenance and schooling of child 41 weeks while under 7 years of age" and "allowance for upholding life being left with four small children." As such she was permitted to sell real estate and on 13 January 1796, as Sarah Wallace, widow of Exeter she sold two acres in Exeter for $20 to Noah Gilman, said land having been bought by her husband on 17 April 1778 from Benjamin Gilman. [Rockingham Co. Deeds 140:457]. Sarah is listed in the 1800 census at Exeter with a female 26 to 45 and one over 45 (which is likely she). She is still there, alone, in the 1810 census. She is not in N.H. in the 1820 census. \\More research is needed for Sarah's identity (although one would think she hails from Exeter).
Based on the 1790 census and Spencer's estate papers, he was the father of (at least) four children. One of them is very likely the George Wallace who married Dolly Paul at Exeter . Another must be Comfort Wallis who married Stephen Smith at Gilmanton. We can safely place her in the family for the following reasons: (i) Spencer would name a daughter after his mother; (ii) his brothers both named daughters Comfort, but they are accounted for elsewhere; (iii) Comfort moves to Tunbridge, Vermont, another Orange Co. town where her first cousins would also settle; and (iv) she names a son Spencer Smith. By making this identification we also find two more daughters who are known sisters of Comfort. The last, John was found in Massachusetts records [John's death record clearly gives his parents as Spencer and Sarah and birthplace as Exeter]. Thus, five children are accounted for, although there may be more.
