General Notes: Husband - Hiram Allen
Hiram Allen was a soldier in the War of 1812. He enlisted at Norwich, and mustered into service at Burlington, VT in early May, 1813. He served one year as a private in Captain J. Morrill's Company of the 34th U.S. Infantry. He was honorably discharged at Barton, Vermont. When applying for bounty land in 1850, Hiram stated that he "received a certificate of discharge which thinking it was not of any use to him was left with his grandfather, Jude Allen, in the State of Vermont which has become lost & destroyed." For his military service, Hiram received 160 acres of bounty land and, beginning in 1871, $8.00 pension each month. Hiram and his young family can be located in the town of Whitehall, Washington Co, NY in 1820, and that is probably where the eldest several children were born. By 1825 he had relocated to the town of Caroline, Tompkins Co, NY, and in 1830 he had moved to the nearby town of Dryden. By around 1835 or 36, Hiram and Polly Allen moved to Huron Co, OH with their family, where early on they lived in the village of Olena. Polly Allen died about 1847, and in 1848 Hiram remarried to Drucilla (Button) Cornish, widow of Benjamin Cornish. Their combined families moved to Middlebury, Elkhart Co, IN about 1852.
