He served in the Civil War for a term of three years as a private in Captain William Powers' Company I, 88th Regiment of Indiana Infantry Volunteers. In the early part of 1863, his company was ordered to march from Louisville to Crab Orchard, Kentucky and "we had to lay on the damp ground without our tents…and most of us took a bad cold… and Charles Allen got his first start of lung and throat trouble, which took such a hold on him that he had to go to the hospital for some time, and from there got a furlough to come home. And after staying at home for some time he came back to the Regiment - and not being able to --- machinery he got to be a teamster… I knew him from the time of his discharge until his death, and would say he was not a sound man by any means and had to be helped by his father in law James Pearson [sic] who is now dead." There are two gravestones here: a small stone is marked with the names of Charles' children--Sherman, Lillian, and "Infant"; a larger stone has Charles' name, death date, and "Age 39y 11m 28d." The base of this stone is inscribed with "Harriet Allen Loomis" and "George E. Allen."
