Elma Jane Locke was born out of wedlock – her mother, Eliza Cass was not married to her father Thomas Locke. However she was raised by her father and his wife, Sarah Cochran, who her father married three years after her birth. Her father was a descendant of Capt. John Locke, one of the first residents of Rye, NH ("famous" for having been killed by an Indian while in his fields, but not before cutting off the Indian's nose). There is an active Locke Family Association which holds annual reunions in Rye, NH.

Josiah F. in 1870 census
Photographer, resided Manchester, NH
Biographical infor from Larrimore Crockett, Dummerston, VT 05301(2011)
Josiah True Langley moved to Manchester when he was fourteen years old and lived there until his death, but retained a summer home in Epsom. For much of his adult life, and up until a year or so before his death, he owned and ran a photographer's studio at 780 Elm Street in Manchester. He is described in family records as a "photographer, sculptor and inventor." He is said to have sculpted the bust of the Bishop of the New Hampshire Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. In addition to being a prolific portrait photographer, he was, according to his daughter, Florence, also a pioneer in the photography of snowflakes. He invented the equipment needed to photograph snowflakes but refused to take out a patent on this or any of his other inventions. Following his retirement from photography, he was associated with the Amoskeag Mills. His residence in Manchester, from 1903 on, was 191 Winter Street. He was a past Noble Grand of Mechanics Lodge, I.O.O.F, (Odd Fellows Lodge) and held membership in Amoskeag Lodge, A.O.U.W. (Ancient Order of United Workmen). Josiah Langley believed himself to be related to Samuel Pierpont Langley, Director of the Smithsonian Institution and a pioneer in aviation, but his family has not been able to pin down the relationship. According to his daughter, Florence, his death was caused by long exposure to photographic chemicals.
General Notes: Wife - Kate Townsend
Biographical infor from Larrimore Crockett, Dummerston, VT 05301(2011)
Although born in Dublin, NH, Kate grew up in Harrisville, because they changed the town line from one side of the house to the other. Her father, David Milton Townsend, was a farmer in Dublin and her mother, Maria Helen (or Helen Maria) Powers, was a schoolteacher. Kate joined the Congregational Church in Dublin on Jan 2, 1887, but left the church when they refused to let her attend services without a bustle. She went to college around 1888 at Keene State Normal School (now Keene State College), in Keene, NH and became a teacher and taught in Harrisville and then in Manchester, NH where she met Josiah True Langley and married him in 1891. After her husband's death in 1916, Kate, who had always been a perfect seamstress, making all the clothes for her twin daughters, herself and her family, became a full-time seamstress to support the family. She spent the last 20 years of her life going for six months of each year to live with her daughter, Florence Harris in Staten Island, NY, and the other six months to live with her other daughter, Grace Hall in Goffstown, NH. Her granddaughter, Shirley Harris, related that her grandmother told her that she was content to sit all day in a rocking chair, because every night, she dreamt that she was running all night long, and she needed to rest during the day. She died on Staten Island in 1942. She was a constant reader and loved the movies. Kate is buried with her husband, Josiah, in Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, NH.
