MacKENZIE, William J.
February 1, 1934
Paper Unknown
William J. MacKenzie died at his home in Gossville on Thursday night February 1, after a brief illness with pneumonia. Mr. MacKenzie was born in Nova Scotia, 58 years ago, and has lived in Epsom since 1898.
He was at first connected with the shoe company at Gossville and later was employed at Silver and Young's store for nearly 20 years. His immediate survivors are the widow, Mrs. Florence Dow MacKenzie; a son, Verne MacKenzie of Epsom; a daughter, Mrs. Hazel M. Whiting of Tamworth and three grandchildren.
Services were conducted by Rev. Ralph Osborne at the Epsom Baptist church on Sunday afternoon, Rev. Ralph Barnes, formerly pastor of the Methodist church in Chichester, gave the prayer at the funeral and Mr. and Mrs. Barnes sang "The Old Rugged Cross". Mrs. Barnes also sang a solo. Burial was in the McClary Cemetery at Epsom Center.
From Rebecca Whiting Family Online Tree: Elizabeth Whiting Wynne wrote regarding William MacKenzie "I do know that your Grammie Whiting is not just turning over in her grave. She is whirling around at the mere suggestion that her family name was spelled without an a. She and my grandmother always told me that Irish people spelled the name McKenzie and Scottish people spelled the name MacKenzie. I do recall hearing one of my grandmother's neighbors (Vivian Pickard whose name was on one of the early census records) refer to my grandfather as "the Scotsman". I also recall in a local newpaper article my grandfather was referred to as William "The Scotsman" MacKenzie. My mother once said that everyone who did not call him "The Scotsman" called him William. As I recall my mother said he had a very heavy accent. I bet that was a novelty in rural NH in the late 1800's and early 1900's! Since nicknames are terms of endearment, I think that is one more sign that he was well liked and accepted in his community. Of course my grandmother being part of the Dow family may have automatically given them some respect in the community."
