Obituary Brooklyn Eagle Aug. 10, 1901
Mrs. Mary Jane Chadwick
The announcement of the sudden death on Jyly 30, at Epsom, NH of Mrs. Mary Jane Chadwick (nee Rand), will bring profound sorrow to many a Brooklyn home. Mrs. Chadwick was born in Epsom, NH July 21, 1826, being, therefore, a little over 75 years of age. She was the last of a family of ten children to receive Death's summons. Mrs. Chadwick, with her late husband James C. Chadwick, settled in Brooklyn about thirty five years ago. They were blessed with three children, one of whom died quite young; and Mr. Chadwick, who was a prosperous merchant, a faithful citizen and a sincere Christian, died some six years hence.
Of the personal character of Mrs. Chadwick, one cannot speak too highly. Justice, charity, truth, sincereity, meekness and love were dominant elements in her beautiful Christian character. She was one of the first members of the Rev. Dr. Talmage's church and her consecrated efforts in alll that pertained to the welfare and interests of that church never ceased till the third fire swept away the last edifice, and so great was her devotion and so deeply sis she feel the loss of her church homes that she never passed their sites but her eyes were filled with tears. The health of Mrs. Chadwick had perceptibly failed during the last few months, yet none of the members of her own household suspected she would so soon be taken from them. To her, the Angel of Death was neither an unexpected nor an unwelcome messenger; yet she carefully concealed this from her son and daughter to spare their grief. She planned a trip to her native place, literally and prophetically "set her house in order," calmly and cheerfully remarked to some dear friends and neighbors that she was bidding them "goodbye for the last time," and journeyed to Epsom unattended, being quite able to travel alone. There she was welcomed by and entertained by D. Ethridge and family. On the following Sunday evening July 29, with the members of that family, Mrs. Chadwick joined in the hymns and sang with a feeling and vigor that were surprising, and concluded with one of her favorite hymns, "A Charge to Keep I Have." This proved to be "the singing of her own requiem," for ere she retired, heart failure developed. A physician was summoned, but she lingered only four hours. Her faculties were clear to the last, her face radiant with smiles. and with the words, "Heaven, Heaven," upon her lips, she fell asleep.
The funeral services were held on Thursday, August 1. The remains were placed beside those of her husband in the cemetery at Epsom, where also repose her brothers, sisters, parents and grandparents. There survive a daughter, son and grandson.
