Josiah F. in 1870 census
Photographer, resided Manchester, NH
Biographical infor from Larrimore Crockett, Dummerston, VT 05301(2011)
Josiah True Langley moved to Manchester when he was fourteen years old and lived there until his death, but retained a summer home in Epsom. For much of his adult life, and up until a year or so before his death, he owned and ran a photographer's studio at 780 Elm Street in Manchester. He is described in family records as a "photographer, sculptor and inventor." He is said to have sculpted the bust of the Bishop of the New Hampshire Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. In addition to being a prolific portrait photographer, he was, according to his daughter, Florence, also a pioneer in the photography of snowflakes. He invented the equipment needed to photograph snowflakes but refused to take out a patent on this or any of his other inventions. Following his retirement from photography, he was associated with the Amoskeag Mills. His residence in Manchester, from 1903 on, was 191 Winter Street. He was a past Noble Grand of Mechanics Lodge, I.O.O.F, (Odd Fellows Lodge) and held membership in Amoskeag Lodge, A.O.U.W. (Ancient Order of United Workmen). Josiah Langley believed himself to be related to Samuel Pierpont Langley, Director of the Smithsonian Institution and a pioneer in aviation, but his family has not been able to pin down the relationship. According to his daughter, Florence, his death was caused by long exposure to photographic chemicals.
