From the MInnesota Horticulturist - IN MEMORIAM Mrs. J. W. Ray, Pasadena, CAL. Died January 30th, 1910
"Georgena Babb Ray was born in EPsom NH March 4th, 1831. Her father was aDr. James Babb, a skillful and progressive physican of his state and time. Her mother was Anna Maria Lang, a direcet descendant of John Locke. From such ancestry it is not strange that a character and personality was evovled for balance, intellectual force and Christian character having few equals.
She was married December 28th, 1848 in Manchester, NH to Rev. John W. Ray, and together they removed to Minnesota in 1872, and wer constantly and actively engaged in and identified with Christian work in that state, her husband holding pastorate at Hastings, Lake City and Wabasha. The Rev. Mr. Ray died in 1901, and since which time MRs. Ray made her home with Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Gates in Minneapolis. SHe is survived by a daughter, MRs. E. P. Gates.
Her disposition was sheerful and helpful, and her memory wonderfully retentive and minute, and retained almost every incident, experiecne, name and face connected with her long life, even to the last, making her a most delight companion and friend." = Passadena Daily.
While living in Minneaoplois, Mrs. Ray was a member of the Horticultural Society and derived great pleasure in attending both winter and summer meetings. She evinced an intense love for nature in its caried forms and largely so along the line of horticulture. The wild flowers and native trees and shrubs seemed to have an especial attraction for her, and her knowledge of varieties, their characteristics, even theri medicinal values, was really wonderful for an amateur. She sertainly was a source of inspiration to all who came in contact with her, for her teaching and example led to many to realize that enjoyment can be obtained through life by becoming intersted in the possibilities that are at hand, making the most of what are often considered as trivial things-too common for notice. The example of such as she brings us in closer touch with nature. Mrs. Anna B. Underwood.
