SANBORN, Henry F.
July 17, 1933
Paper Unknown
The news of the tragic death of Henry F. Sanborn of New York came as a great shock to his friends in this vicinity. Mr. Sanborn was 44 years of age, the son of the late Judge Walter H. Sanborn and Emily Bruce Sanborn. In boyhood, his summer vacations were passed in Epsom on the Sanborn farm. He was a visitor to Epsom during the early spring of this year and intended to visit his mother, Mrs. Sanborn and sister, Mrs. Grace Hartin during their stay in New Hampshire this summer. Of pleasing personality and friendly disposition, Mr. Sanborn apparently had no enemies and his sudden death is very mysterious. Mr. Sanborn disappeared on July 17 and his body shot twice in the back was found by berry pickers on Long Island last Saturday. The body was brought to McClary cemetery for interment on Wednesday afternoon, burial being near the graves of Mr. Sanborn's great-grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Sanborn, who were among the early settlers of Epsom. The services at the cemetery were private and attended by members of the family. Scripture reading and prayer were conducted by Rev. Ralph Osborn, pastor of the Epsom Baptist church. Albert J. Yeaton, Edwin L. Bunker, William H. Knowles and Hollis Hall acted as bearers. Elmer Goodwin of Manchester was the undertaker.

Have Lead In Sanborn Death
Mysterious Murder of R. R. Executive May Be Solved by Clue Admitted by Officials Connected With Case
New York, Aug 9 (U.P.) \endash Detectives seeking a solution to the mysterious murder of Henry F. Sanborn, railroad executive and member of a prominent family, are working on a definite lead, it was learned today in a high official quarter.
No intimation of the nature of the lead was available, but it was believed detectives had decided Sanborn was killed by a person or persons he knew well and that the motive was personal vengeance.
To all outward appearances the mystery of Sanborn's death was as far from solution as when his body was discovered in a shallow grave near a well traveled highway. Innumerable clues had been followed without revealing anything that pointed toward his slayers.
Money In Pocket
While the possibility that he had been killed either by kidnappers or blackmailers was given serious consideration, detectives believed the fact that over $500 was in his pocket when the body was found, strongly indicated the slayers were not professional criminals.
Seeking a motive for a slaying of vengeance, detectives found little in Sanborn's life to help them. His business career had been conservative and his relations with women were equally sedate, although he had been married twice and was planning to marry again this fall.
A fully loaded revolver was found in Sanborn's room in a Y.M.C.A. dormitory and some investigators took it to mean that he had been threatened and had prepared to defend himself.
[Additional newspaper accounts tell he was twice divorced]
