General Notes: Husband - Samuel Rand
Samuel moved to Epsom, NH after purchasing land from Timothy Marden (brother to Joseph, his wife's father) along with his brother in-law William Rand (who married Samuel's sister, Sarah). There are no further Rye records after the birth of his first daughter. The 1790 and 1800 census for Epsom, NH would tend to verify the births of Samuel and Eleanor, plus two other children (male) under the age of 10 (1800). A deed selling the land purchased from Timothy Marden to Joseph Lawrence in 1804 is signed by Samuel, which indicates he was living at that date, and is wittnessed by Samuel Rand Jr. and Eleanor Rand, giving further evidence that these were his children. It would appear as though they moved shortly after the sale of the land as there is no further record of him or his son's in Epsom, NH after that date. Daughter Eleanor married Enoch Brown and stayed in Epsom, NH. There is no record of the first daughter Sarah.

2 F Sarah Elizabeth Marden

General Notes: Husband - Abraham W. Marden
The only cemetery records are also incomplete. An old Marden Cemetery just south of the Epsom, NH Traffic Circle, has no remaining stones, but in 1940, there was one recorded "Abram W. Marden died Nov. 23, 1812 age 18 years". This may have been read incorrectly, as Jonathan Dolbeer has Abraham Marden's death recorded as Nov. 23, 1847 age 48. , In looking at old and worn grave stones, 4's and 1's were easily mistaken, as are 2's and 7's, and since Dolbeer gives the exact date of death as Nov. 23, it had to be the stone of Abraham W. Marden. This would make the Getchell Genealogy of the Marden's incorrect at assuming there was a child Abram W. born and dying in 1812. The small cemetery also contains a footstone marked S.E.M. of which the headstone (1997) is no longer legible. It was recorded in 1940 by E.P. Rowell as "S.E. dau. of A.W. & M.B. Marden d Dec. 18, 1832 age 5 weeks". This is also recorded by Dolbeer. Getchell also indicates an unknown daughter according to the 1830 census, which could be S.E. and not another child, as no child under 5 is mentioned in that census. The 1830 census also indicates another son under the age of 5.
Abraham W. Marden was granted by Selectmen in Epsom, NH license to keep open tavern for two years in 1827. He owned a store in Short Falls which was sold in 1825 to Wendall Marden. He died intestate and both his son Philip and his widow Mary declined to administer the estate and asked that it be done by Thomas D. Merrill of Epsom, NH.
A license to sell liquor was granted to Abraham W. Marden in 1818. If he was born 1799, he would have been aage 19. If he was son of James and Rachel Blake (Wallace) Marden, who were married in 1802, and he was actually born as their first child, early 1803, he would have a liquor license at age 15, which is unlikely.
