His mother died when he was less than a year old, and very likely he and his brother Gideon lived more or less with their grandfather, David Burbank, at Deerfield, New Hampshire. At the time of his marriage he was living in Deerfield. Soon after his marriage he settled in Lowell, Mass., and was employed in a textile mill as an executive officer or overseer for some years. The Lowell Directory gives him as overseer of the Hamilton Corporation and living on Hamilton street. His name appears in the directories of Lowell from 1832 to 1857 when it disappears.

In about 1857, he moved to Harvard, Illinois, where he lived the rest of his life. He was in business in Harvard -- one record says that he was in the grain and lumber business, another says he was commission merchant -- dealing in eggs, chickens, etc.
