Birth based on age at date of death.
August 20, 2006 - Gathered here in this cemetery today, between the living and the dead, are 8 direct line generations of William Rand. We are here today to dedicate to William Rand, an SAR marker to commemorate his service in the formation of these United States through his service in the Continental Army against the common enemy.
Patriot William Rand was born in 1744 in Hampton, New Hampshire, the son of Thomas Rand and Elizabeth Chapman. In 1776 the family moved to Deerfield in a house constructed at the top of a hill, known for many year's as Rand's Corner, just above this, William's final resting place.
He enlisted in June of 1776 for six months under Capt. Simon Marston's Company, Colonel Joshua Wingate's Regiment for the march to Ticonderoga. He appears on the Revolutionary War muster rolls from Deerfield for advance wages and bounty, guns and blanket money plus travel allowance. A roll of travel of the company commanded by Captain Simon Marston of Deerfield in Colonel Joshua Wingate's Regiment, September 10, 1776, shows William Rand of Deerfield having traveled 109 miles.
Following his service, he married April 12, 1781, Mary James, and in 1796, on the death of his father Thomas, assumed the responsibilities of the homestead. Many of his son's remained in Deerfield, and the family homestead remained in descendant's hands until 1958.
