Jas. M. Rand
We chronicle with regret the demise of this old and valued citizen. He was well known to the elder generation, having been a resident of this city for the past forty-two years. He had many warm friends, all of whom mourn him as a good man gone from earth. He was a builder by profession, and before the war conducted a very large business. Competent in his vocation and honorable in his dealings, it is not strange that he won to himself so much confidence and esteem. He was a native of Epsom, N.H. whence he came to settle here, and was at the time of his death sixty-gour years of age. He has left a devoted family, to whom are extended heartfelt sympathies in their deep affliction.
From the will:
My name is James Monroe Rand, and I was born in Chichester, New Hampshire. I am married to Eloise Reister, who is now alive and we have one son, named James Monroe Rand, and he is the only surviving issue of our marriage. I have no other descendants.
I give and bequeath unto the following named persons the following specified sums of mone, which I desire to be paid over to each of them as speedily as possible after my death:
To Stephen Rand, my brother, of Hanover, New Hampshire, Three Hundred Dollars.
To John C. Hall, of Epsom, New Hampshire, Two Hundred Dollars.
To his daughter Amanda, Four Hundred Dollars.
To his daughter Jennie Hall Stebbins, Two Hundred Dollars.
To his daughter Mrs. Martha Emery, Two Hundred Dollars.
To his daughter Sarah Taylor,Two Hundred Dollars
To his daughter Georgia Hall Two Hundred Dollars
To Mrs. Martha Ames of Epsom, New Hampshire, Two Hundred Dollars.
To Mrs. Lydia Cilley of Epsom, New Hampshire, Three hundred dollars
To Mrs. Barbary Weitzel, the widow of August Weitzel, now living in the Sixth District of this City, Two Hundred Dollars.
All the property that I now own, except the premises of 370 Baronne Street, belongs to the community of acquets and gaines that exist between me and my wife Eloise, and consequently she is entitled to her community half of said property and my half or share of such property. I give to my son James Monroe Rand, making him my sole universal heir, and moreover Specially bequeath apart from his universal heirship, Twenty five Thousand Dollars in United States Bonds, unto my said son James Monroe Rand which Bonds are of the United States four per cent loan, of registry in my name in three certificates, two of Ten Thousand Dollars each and one of Five Thousand Dollars.
I appoint my wife and my said son Executors of this my last wiff, with seized of my Estate, and I revoke all other wills that I may have heretofore made.
Total value of estate after appraisal - $120,209.64.
