General:

Mary Fellows Cavanagh, youngest child of Stephen Fellows Jr., wrote about what life was like during the early days in Palmyra Township, Illinois. Below is what she wrote including the story of how it came about by her daughter Julie Cavanagh McElroy:

Samuel McGaffey had five sons: Josiah, John, Samuel Jr., Neal, and Eliphalet. He had two daughters, Margaret and Rachel, each of whom became the wife of Stephen Fellows, Jr.
My father, Stephen Fellows Jr., had fifteen children, the first ten being the children of his first wife, Margaret (usually called Peggy). The other five were the children of Rachel, his second wife. All except myself were born in Sandwich, NH. I was born on the farm near Dixon, Illinios.
My father, Stephen Fellows Jr., owned a small farm near Sandwich, NH and also owned and operated a fulling mill. But as two of his children were married and the family had begun to scatter, he felt the best thing he could do was to emigrate to the Great West. So he and his son-in-law , John H. Page, with their families, moved from Sandwch, N.H., to Lee Lounty, Il., on Rock River, in 1834.
