PIONEER DROPS DEAD AT CLUB
Heart Failure Causes Death of
H. S. Hazeltine, Prominent
in Berkeley.
BERKELEY, July 16.- H. F. Hazeltine,
pioneer of Berkeley and of the
state, former member of the Berkeley
board of education, dropped dead in the
doorway of the Union Club last night of
heart failure. He had been suffering
from the disease for some time and had
been under the constant care for several
weeks of Dr. Clark Burnham.
Haseltine had been prominent in the
exclusive Union Club for some years
and accustomed to spending many of
his days and evenings there. Last evening
he entered the clubrooms in the
Native Sons' building about 9 o'clock.
As he started through the doorway he
suddenly moaned and fell in his tracks.
Other members of the club who were
present hurried to his assistance and
summoned medical aid. Before a physician
could arrive he had expired. Due
to his being a subject of the disease
for some time the formality of an inquest
was dispensed with by Deputy
Coroner B. E. Niehaus.
Haseltine was born in Wisconsin seventy-
two years ago. He came to California
shortly after the Civil war, in
which he saw service in the Union
ranks. He engaged in commercial business
in San Francisco and other California
cities for many years, coming to
Berkeley to live about twenty years ago.
He had resided here since that time at
2711 Russell street, South Berkeley. He
served two terms as member of the
board of education, while W. K. Weir
was president of that body. He was
interested in a number of tracts of land
in different parts of the state. He was
a member of tho Union Club practically
since its institution. Ho was proprietor
for some years of a grocery in South
Berkeley.
Deceased is survived by three sons,
Richard, Harvey and Lawrence Haseltine,
and two daughters, Misses Margaret
and Sarah Haseltlne.
The members
of his family are all out of the
city at the present tlme, and arrangements
for the funeral will he delayed till their return.

HASELTINE HAS
RETURNED HOME
BERKELEY, Sept. 13.-After spending
two months in the east and the
southwest, School Director H. S. Haseltine,
of 2717 Russell street, has returned
to Berkeley. Most of the time was
spent by Haseltine at the home of his
brother at Ripon, Wisconsin, whom he
has not seen for twenty-five years.
During his stay there the family had
a reunion. The average age of those
present was seventy years. Haseltine
also visited the old school that he attended
in 1862, which is located at
Stevens' point. Many of the former
pupils were present, and the occasion
was one of enjoyment, in which old
times were talked over.
