Went to Pittsfield, NH about 1857 to work at shoemaking. Enlisted in the Civil War Sept. 1862, and by this time had two children. Following the war he apparently was residing in Danvers, MA.
From info from Norma Flude (10/2000)
"Shown on 1900 Danvers, MA census with Prentice and Sarah (Philbrick) Marston, buried in Wallace lot in Holten St. Cemetery, Danvers, MA, but name is not on family stone. Was called "Uncle Charles" by Aunt Helen (Wallace) and my mother, Mildred. Aunt Helen (Marston) Wallace claims birthdate was 18 Jan. 1836; death certificate calculates out to 27 Jan. 1839. Enlisted at Concord on the 25th day of April for a term of 3 years. Was in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Swift Creek, Rebry (sic) House, & Drury's Bluff. He was taken sick at Gettysburg & sent to Carver Hospital in Washington D.C.. He rejoined his regiment at Point Lookout, from which he was sent home on recruiting service. He was absent on detached duty from the regiment at Cold Harbor, returned in front of Petersburg & remained with it until the close of the rebellion. At Chancellorsville he received a slight wound in the neck. He was a private in Co. F 12th regiment NHV Infantry. Appointed a Corporal 20 Feb 1863. Wounded at Chancellorsville 3 May 1863. Appointed Sergeant 1 Dec 1863. Mustered out 21 June 1865. The foregoing remarks are written by Helen (Marston) Wallace, niece of John, who was called "Charles" by the family."
Death record gives him as John Charles Herbert Philbrick, born June 7, 1839, Epsom. died Jun 15, 1915, Danvers, MA

JOHN H. PHILBRICK
came to Pittsfield about 1857, to work at shoemaking. He was a son of John
H. F. and Martha (Ham) Philbrick, and was born in Epsom, January 17, 1836.
January 5, 1859, he married Mary A. Durgin, of Pittsfield. and when he enlisted,
in September, 1862, he left two children with his wife.
He was promoted to corporal February 2, 1863. At the Battle of
Chancellorsville, the following May 3, he was slightly wounded. He was promoted
to sergeant December 1, 1863. He took part in the battles of Fredericksburg,
Swift Creek, Dairy's Bluff. At Petersburg he was again wounded, this time in
the neck.
While the regiment was encamped at Point Lookout, during the winter of
1863-'64. Sergeant Philbrick was sent home on recruiting service, and after
his return he served with the regiment until his discharge at the close of the
war. I understand that Philbrick is now in Danvers, Mass.
