GREAT CALAMITY - Fire and loss of Life
On Sturday evening last, the 23rd inst., the hotel of W.W. Abbott, at Plainsburg in this county, was consumed by fire, and two of his children were smothered to death in the smoke and flames, before they could be rescued by the father and mother, both of whom rushed frantically to the room where their children were sleeping as soon as the alarm was given. The circumstances as we glean them from the flying rumors, are about as follows: Mrs. Abbott had put her children to bed and gone to supper, leaving a kerosene lamp burning in the room as usual, and while eating supper, the fire was discovered and the alarm given, when the mother and father, together with others about the house, rushed to the room where it was known the children were sleeping; but too late! - the children were suffocated by the smoke and flame before succor reached them. The hotel, with all its contents, was consumed, which, in itself could not but be considered a very severe loss to Mr. and Mrs. Abbott, both of whom had worked hard for several years past to earn the property; but they count that as nothing when compared to the loss of their household treasures - their darling little girls - whom the fond parents lavished all the love of their hearts upon. It is, indeed, a sad and irreparable loss! We cannot fully express the pain we felt on receipt of the news of the great calamity, the children being general favorites with the inmates of the house, and the pets of all who knew them.

NEW HOTEL
New Hotel. - Mr. W.W. Abbott has erected upon the site of the hotel recently destroyed by fire, at Plainsburg, one of the most spacious and commodious hotels to be found any where in the country, and is again doing a brisk business. His carriages and express wagons run from the hotel to the Deadman's Creek station on the Valley railroad, connection twice each day with the passenger trains for the accommodation of travelers. Mr. Abbott is an accommodating landlord and his guests seldom fail to be satisfied with his entertainment and prices. Plainsburg is one of the liveliest little villages in the Valley, being surrounded by a rich and well-settled section of the country, and is now rapidlly improving - the business men of the place having no fears of the business of the town being drawn away by rival towns on the railroad. The people of the surrounding country are well-to-do farmers, and as they buy their supplies at home and pay their bills punctually, trade and business of every kind in the place continue to prosper and grow in importance with the improved condition of the surrounding country.
