General Notes: Husband - John Lovering
John Lovering, Jr. was the son of John Lovering, Sr. & Esther _____. His
father emigrated from Wales in 1654 to the Massachusetts Bay Colony at
Ipswich, removed by 1657 to Dover, New Hampshire & became a freeman that
year. He is listed on the tax rolls beginning with 21 Jul 1657. John, Sr.
was a constable, served on the grand jury, was a witness & was the earliest
foreman of the mill at Quamphegan Falls (Rollinsford, NH) owned by Thomas
Broughton. He married Esther ________ between 1656-1660, most likely 1660.
It was the FIRST marriage for both of them. Esther/Hester was NEVER the wife
of Valentine Hill & has often been confused with Mary Eaton, who did. Mary &
Valentine had their last child in Mar 1660 & he died in 1662. Mary did marry
Ezekiel Knight as his last wife, AFTER he had married the widow Esther
Lovering & After she had passed away BEFORE 29 Jun 1675.
> John had at least two children that can be verified: Mary, who was born
in 1661 & who was married to William Thompson, son of William Thompson on 4
Sep 1682. Elias Stileman was the minister. The other child was John, Jr. He
was born 16 May 1663 in Dover, NH. Any children "born" after 1668 are
suspect.
> John, Sr. purchased 50 acres, with a sawmill, at the foot of Quamphegan
Falls on 18 May 1663 from Andrew Wiggin, two days after his son was born.
John, Sr. died on 27 Jul 1668, his estate was inventoried in August &
brought into court in Sept. His wife Esther/Hester & Capt Richard Waldron
were appointed by the court as administators of the estate. Capt John
Wincoll, brother-in-law of Thomas Broughton, & Ezekiel Knight, whom Esther
married SECOND, were appointed guardians of the children.
> John, Jr., his mother Esther, & his stepfather Ezekiel signed an
indenture on 4 Apr 1672 for TWELVE years. Under the terms of the indenture,
John Jr. was to be apprenticed to Abraham Tillton & accompany him to
Ipswich, Mass. Abraham was to teach him the skills of a carpenter &
millwright. The indenture was to begin on 16 May 1672, John's ninth birthday
& terminate on 16 May 1684 when John reached majority. John signed the
indenture as "John Loverell", NOT Lovewell as frequently misquoted. John
Lovewell was a famous military man of the time.
> John married Hannah Kilham, the daughter of DANIEL Kilham & Mary Safford
on 1 Mar 1686 & MAY have married Love Parsons on 19 Mar 1701/2. The date of
Hannah's death is unknown, but she did sign the deed for the land transfer,
when John Lovering, Jr. sold his father's Quamphegan property to Thomas
Abbot on 21 Jun 1700. John, Jr. had 12 children: John, Samuel, Joseph,
Ebenezer, Mary, Esther (d.y.), Hannah (d.y.), Daniel, Esther, Benjamin,
Hannah & William. ALL were christened in Wenham, Mass. John, Jr. died 4 Jan
1717/8.
> Daniel was born 1700 in Ipswich, Mass & christened in Apr 1700 in
Wenham, Mass. He & some of his brothers moved to various locations in the
Province of New Hampshire. Daniel owned land in the area of Great Hill, near
the road to Kingston. He married FIRST Mary Cilley (Sylla, Sealey). The
marriage intention was announced 14 Dec 1724 & they were married 25 Dec
1724. They had two children: 1) Abigail, born 15 Dec 1725 in Exeter, NH &
died 28 Aug 1818 in Raymond, NH & buried with her FIRST husband Jethro
Batchelder, Jr. in the Loudon (NH) Village Cemetery. She married SECOND
Daniel Lane. 2) John Prescott, born 10 Jan 1726/7 & died 3 Apr 1802. He
married Abigail Clough. Mary Cilley died & Daniel married SECOND Mary Smith
about 1728. They had five children: Mary, born 13 Apr 1729; Ebenezer, born 5
Apr 1731; Miriam & Moses, Sr. (twins), born 1 Jul 1735; & Hannah, born 31
Mar 1738/9. Daniel died about 1767.
> Moses, Sr. also owned land in the Great Hill area as did other
relatives. He married Penelope Taylor, the daughter of Joseph Taylor &
Penelope Favor, on 10 Mar 1760 in Kingston, NH. When Joseph passed away, two
of Penelope's younger sisters chose Moses to be their guardian in Apr 1761.
Moses & Penelope had thirteen children: Penelope, Willoby, Osgood, Nancy,
Moses, Jr., Taylor, Jesse, Mary, Zebulon, John T(aylor), Daniel, William &
Sarah. At the urging of his halfsister Abigail, Moses, Sr. started
purchasing land in Loudon (NH) in Feb 1782. She had convinced him that there
were good possibilities for establishing a mill. After several purchases, he
moved his family to Loudon in 1787. The homestead grew to over 400 acres &
extended from the Canterbury townline near Clough Pond to the Soucook River.
On the Clough Pond Road, there is a Lovering family cemetery on the old
homestead, with two black castiron gates with the name LOVERING in gold
lettering. The cemetery is 109.35!
> rods long. Many of the children of Moses, Sr. & their ancestors are
buried here. Moses, Sr died somewhere around 1810. Daniel & William moved to
Springfield, NH with their uncle, Ebenezer. Willoby & Osgood moved to
Stewartstown, NH about 1816. Taylor moved first to Springfield, then to
Dorchester & finally to Stanstead, Province of Quebec. Ancestors of Moses,
Sr. are now spread all over the United States & Canada.
