Sanborn, Jr., FASG, resigned as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland a few years ago, and was for 23 years Director of Library Operations and a reference librarian at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a native of Moultonborough, New Hampshire, and past president of the New Hampshire Society of Genealogists as well as the first editor of the revived quarterly, The New Hampshire Genealogical Record.

History of Barnstead NH by Peabody and Caverly, contains the following: "In the year 1787 a petition for a road through North Barnstead to Dover was signed by Lemuel B. Mason, Ebenezer Nutter, Israel Avery, William Green, Moses Avery, Benjamin Avery, and Samuel Avery. The road was commencd near half-moon pond.
The Revolutionary War Pension papers for Moses Avery, includes a deposition by Israel Avery stating that he and older brothers Moses and Samuel, were living with their father Benjamin Avery in Barnstead at the time of their enlistment. Both brothers were older.
Records of Barnstead also give the death of a Samuel Avery in 1795, aged 76. This would not be the Samuel above as he removed to Vermont where he died in 1831 (see Rev. War pension for Samuel Avery).
General Notes: Wife - Mehetabel Blake
There is no written or hard evidence that proves Mehetabel Blake married Benjamin Avery, nor is her given name carried down in the known family line. She is given as daughter of Israel Blake in the Desecendants of Jasper Blake, including her baptisim which places her in this family. Her brother Israel settled in Thornton, NH, as did Benjamin Avery, and the name Israel is also present in the Benjamin Avery line. This caveat should appear in any lineage of descendants of this line.
Notes: Marriage
There is no documentation for any marriage between Benjamin Avery and Mehetable Blake. If indeed she was his first wife, he remarried after her death, and would have been the mother of all his children. Both Benjamin Avery and Israel Avery (brother to Mehetabel) settled in Thornton, NH., and the name Israel appears in the Avery line. There appears to be close ties to these two families, but without any written record, Mehetabel is placed as first wife to Benjamin Avery as strong speculation only. Anyone of this line should clearly state this as a plausible scenario.

General Notes: Wife - Eleanor Unknown
Note from George F. Sanborn Jr.
Eleanor, whose maiden name is not known, had no children with Benjamin Avery; she seems to have been from Cherry Valley, N.Y., where William Thornton lived around the time he married her. They came back to N.H., and eventually ended up in Thornton, N.H., where William, she, and probably also Benjamin all died. Eleanor outlived Benjamin, but there is no record of her death
