James L. Wells passed away at the home of Mrs. Jeffery's, Short Falls, last Monday morning, aged 74 years. Mr. Wells has been a great sufferer for some time with a cancer in his throat. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Rachel Pike, and one son, Harvey J. Wells; also a grandson, Charles C. Rogers, of Pittsfield. The funeral services were held from the house Wednesday. Interment in McClary cemetery.
James Lewis Wells, a life long resident of this town, died at his boarding place on the Suncook road, Sunday afternoon, after an illness of about a year's duration of cancer. He was born in Epsom, March 18, 1837, the son of Samuel and Harriet (Wicom) Wells. He was married April 10, 1861 to Abbie L. Meserve, of this town, who died June 11, 1910.
In his early life he was a miller, but late years he has worked by the day at what ever came his way.
Funeral services were held from the place of death, Wednesday at 12 o'clock, Rev. J.E. Everhingham officiating.
The bearers were M.C. Philbrick, J.V. Bunker, J.C. Fogg and Charles Hall.

Most likely of this family. The 1850 census lists a John Wells age 45 and wife Love, age 31. There does not seem to be another other connection for this John. Dolbeer gives his age at death as 60, which would have him born 1807, though the census in 1850 would place his birth at 1805. The only other John Wells in the area is in Chichester - John Wells and Sally Edmunds, who also had a son John E., who died in Manchester and was born about 1823. His father married Sally Edmonds in 1814, and there is no date of birth or death. His wife died in Epsom, NH, and for this John Wells of Chichester to have died in 1867, he would have only been about age 7 at the time of his marriage. This makes the above John who married Love unknown, and appears in the Epsom, NH 1850 census as the likely John Wells who died in Epsom, NH 1867.
