MORRIL, David Lawrence, senator, was born in Epping, N.H., June 10, 1772; son of Samuel and Anna (Lawrence) Morril, and grandson [p.461] of the Rev. Isaac Morrill, of Wilmington, Mass., whose sons dropped the final "l" in writing their name. He studied medicine, and practised at Epsom, NH, N.H., 1793-1800, and at Goffstown, N.H., 1811-31. He was licensed to preach and was pastor of the Congregational church at Goffstown, N.H., 1802-11. He was a representative in the general court, 1808-17, and speaker in 1816; was U.S. senator for New Hampshire, 1817-23; state senator and president of the senate in 1823-24, and governor of the state, 1824-27, inclusive. He edited the New Hampshire Observer, a religious paper, published in Concord, N.H., 1831-33. The honorary degrees of A.B. and M.D. were conferred on him by Dartmouth college in 1821, and that of LL.D. by the University of Vermont in 1825. He died in Concord, N.H., Jan. 28, 1849.

MORRIL, David Lawrence, a Senator from New Hampshire; born in Epping, N.H., June 10, 1772; taught by his grandfather and later attended Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, N.H.; studied medicine and engaged in practice in Epsom, NH, N.H., 1793-1800; studied theology; was ordained; pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Goffstown in 1802 and served until 1811; resumed the practice of medicine in 1807 and continued until 1830; member of the State house of representatives 1806-1917 and served as speaker in 1816; elected as an Adams Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1517, to March 3, 1823; was not a candidate for renomination; member and president of the State senate in 1823 and 1824; Governor of New Hampshire 1824-1827; moved to Concord in 1831; edited the New Hampshire Observer 1831-1833; died in Concord, N.H., January 28, 1849; interment in Old North Cemetery.
