EPSOM - Ethan T. Keeler, 20, a lifelong Epsom resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013.
Ethan loved family and friends and spending time outdoors. He enjoyed paintball, hunting and fishing and was an avid knife collector. He also liked soccer and was on the high school golf team when he attended Pembroke Academy.
Ethan is survived by his loving family, his father, Eric Keeler of Epsom; a sister, Melissa Keeler of Concord; a brother, Brandon Keeler of Epsom; his nephew, Cooper of Concord; and his paternal grandparents, Duane and Norma Keeler of Meredith and Florida. He also leaves aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends and his best friend of all, Gus.
A memorial gathering will be held Friday, Oct. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Still Oaks Funeral & Memorial Home, 1217 Suncook Valley Hwy. in Epsom.
Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. at the New Rye Union Congregational Church, followed by burial in the New Rye Cemetery.
HOPKINTON, N.H. [Wed. Oct. 9, 2013]\emdash Two men using a cutting torch on a safe containing fireworks sparked an explosion that killed them early Tuesday morning, investigators said.
Police said Lucas Bourke, 21, of Allenstown, and Ethan Keeler, 21, of Epsom, were killed in the explosion in a detached workshop at New Yard Landscaping on Farrington Corner Road in Hopkinton.
Investigators said the men were using an oxy-acetylene cutting torch to try to get into a safe that contained fireworks. That led to the explosion and the men's deaths, police said.
Keeler was arrested last week on a charge of receiving stolen property. Bourke, the father of a young girl, had recently faced an alcohol possession charge, according to court paperwork.
Police said they believe the two were at the workshop to carry out a burglary.
Investigators said the attempt to cut open the 4-foot-high, concrete-lined safe ignited the fireworks. The safe was blown through the building, landing outside -- proof of how powerful the blast was.
Kent Keeler, a cousin of Ethan Keeler struggled for answers on Wednesday. Keeler says family members are wondering why Ethan would have put himself in that situation.
"I think he just didn't know who he was yet," said Kent Keeler. "I feel like he was trying to find out where he belongs."
Keeler noted that his cousin was always put family first.
"He stood up for me in high school when people would pick on me," said Keeler. "He put family over everything."
The interior of the building also suffered heavy damage from the explosion.
According to Concord Police arrest reports, Keeler, who was 20 at the time, was arrested last week on a felony receiving stolen property charge.
The charge stemmed from an alleged incident on Nov. 1, 2012, at the Steeplegate Mall on Loudon Road, involving an iPod Classic 80G player with 4,000 songs on it valued at $4,360. Keeler was arrested by Epsom Police Department, which handed him off to a Concord officer. He was released on $5,000 personal recognizance bail and was due to be arraigned in court on Nov. 18.
Back in July, Keeler was arrested on a felony forgery charge and theft by deception. The charges stemmed from an alleged incident at the TD Bank on Sheep Davis Road on March 22, involving a check for $400. In that case, Epsom Police arrested Keeler and handed him of to police. He was arraigned on the charges on Aug. 26.
On May 18, in Allenstown, Bourke was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of alcohol after police received a report of a suspicious person on Main Street, according to a police report. Bourke was arrested and released on personal recognizance bail. He was arraigned on June 10.
