General:
Jean-Baptiste Girard (also known as John B. Girard) was a former soldier in Napoleon's army who settled in Boston in 1808. In 1809 he married Sarah (also known as Sally) Moses, the daughter of Sylvanus Moses and Mariam Young of Epsom.Marriage Notes (Sarah Moses)
Sarah Moses, John B. Girard and their children left Portsmouth in early 1816 and settled in Montreal, Quebec, where Girard continued in the confectionery business and eventually also became a bailiff to the Court of King's Bench. Tragically, the family's home and confectionery business burnt to the ground on October 27, 1819. It seems that as a consequence and most likely to help the family in difficult times, Sarah's parents Sylvanus Moses and Mariam Young donated all their land and property to their daughter and son-in-law Girard in May, 1820, in exchange for receiving care for the rest of their lives.
It may be that as early as the end of 1819 arrangements were being made since Girard gave his stepson and fellow confectioner, Moses Locke, power of attorney on December 28, 1819. However, this power was revoked and passed on to Sarah Moses on April 19, 1820, perhaps in preparation for the journey to Epsom to finalize the property agreement with her parents. This agreement dates from May 6, 1820, and Sarah signs for Girard. It seems that Girard remained in Montreal at that time, perhaps continuing to support his family working as a bailiff. Girard actually makes an appearance in James Babb's diary. On September 25, 1820, Babb records that "Mr. J.B. Girard came to Epsom Sabbath evening".
