DEERFIELD - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Phyllis Fife Sanborn, 95, Sunday, May 25, 2014, at her home in Deerfield. She was a resident of Deerfield all her life. She was a beautiful person inside and out, always finding the good in everyone she came across.
Born August 3, 1918, she was the daughter of James W. Fife Jr. and Abby Ola Whittier Fife, an only child. She is survived by her son, Stephen Sanborn and wife, Dorothy, of Derry; and her daughter, Sue (Sanborn) Gurnee of Canterbury. She is also survived by her two granddaughters, Anna Gurnee of Canterbury and Brock and Mary (Gurnee) Kerr of Newmarket; along with her two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Eva Kerr.
She is predeceased by her husband, William E. Sanborn, who died in 1990; and her son-in-law, Ed Gurnee, who died October, 2013.
Phyllis attended Deerfield Grammar School and Pembroke Academy, graduating in 1937. She worked at Varick's Dept. Store in Manchester in the 1930s and 1940s. She also worked at NH Lottery in Concord, in the 1970s.
She was an active member of her community, participating faithfully in the Deerfield Fair where she was the Chair of Rugs. Every year, you would be hard-pressed not to see Phyllis overseeing the rug building ensuring everything was running smoothly, questions were being answered and old friends and family warmly greeted. She was also a part of the Legion Auxiliary where she was awarded "Woman of the Year" in 1989. She was involved in the Deerfield Historical Society, a 4-H Leader, and an active attendant at Deerfield Congregational Church and later Trinity Baptist Church in Concord.
Phyllis loved working with her hands and loved the challenge of a new project. She was an avid quilter sewer and braiding rugs. She could also be found frequently outside doing gardening, re-building stone walls, cutting brush, and staining shingles. She was also often found at the family summer camp she loved so much. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, nana, and great nana and will be missed dearly. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/concordmonitor/obituary.aspx?n=phyllis-fife-sanborn&pid=171148949#sthash.BX83EHea.dpuf
