General Notes: Husband - William Wallace
John Mark Moses in his "Epsom Early Settlers" wrote: 'William Wallace of Greenland probably took part in the settlement of the town, but I have not seen record of any of his family being there very early. His son William was in Epsom 1767-69, but returned to Greenland. A William Weymouth Wallace, a Revolutionary soldier from Epsom, was a grandson mentioned in the will of William Sr., of Greenland. He removed to Sandwich.'
William3 WALLIS was born ca. 1690 [based on being married by 1715] probably at Portsmouth, N.H. and died at Greenland, N.H. between June 16 and 24, 1772, the dates on which his will was written and proved, the son of William2 (George1) and Jane (Drake) Wallis. [Rockingham County Probate #3944, Helen F. Evans, Abstracts of the Probate Records of Rockingham County, N.H. 1771-1799 (Batimore, Md.: Heritage Books, 2000) II:983.] His identification as the son of William2 is made by deduction. William2 deeds for life support to his son Samuel3 on 11 February 1722/23, giving him all his lands and instructing him to pay his sisters, Jane, the now wife of Stephen Lang, and Sarah, the now wife of Joshua Foss each twenty shillings. [N.H. Provincial Deeds 13:129-30]. George2 Wallis's estate was administered on 8 January 1724/5 [N.H. State Papers 32:251]. Part of the money was set aside for Caleb Wallis "only son to ye deceased during his natural life he being an idiot and so not capable of maintaining himself." That was dated 12 September 1726 and goes on to name all the daughters of George2. So George2 is eliminated as a father and despite the 1722/23 deed, for reasons of name, place, and timeline, William is placed as the son of William2.
William was called William Jr. of Greenland in 1715 and had a wife Martha in 1717 [Gen. Dict. of Me. and N.H., p. 717]. This is one of the bad aspects of the Gen. Dict. of Me. and N.H. because it gives no specific citation to those statements. I have yet to find them in deeds or court cases. Certainly William's first child is baptized in 1716 in Greenland. [Jane as Jean, daughter of William in Priscilla Hammond, Vital Records of Greenland, New Hampshire 1710-1851 (Concord, N.H., 1938), hereinafter Greenland VRs, p. 54.] Judging by son Samuel's marriage in 1737, he must have been eldest and born say 1715. With the exception of Samuel, all other children are baptized (year given only) from 1716 to 1737. In 1726, Martha Wallice, wife to William Wallice joined the church at Greenland (Greenland VRs, p. 28). Her birth name is not known and efforts to find it have failed. Martha was likely born ca. 1694 and died prior to 1772 when she is not mentioned in William's will.
William Wallis of Greenland, husbandman for £55 sold one acre and 40 rods to Samuel Weeks of Greenland on 1 March 1742/43 [recorded 20 Sept 1745, New Hampshire Provincial Deeds, hereinafter NHPD 20:120]. William Wallace of Greenland, yeoman for and in consideration of ye love good will and natural affection which I have for my son William Wallace, Junr. of Greenland, granted him 48 acres that I bought of Jacob Lavers administrators. This deed is dated 13 June 1758 and recorded on 4 September 1759 [NHPD 60:349]. William Wallis sold to John Libby, 30 acres in Epsom being no. 18 in the fourth range to the original right of said William Wallis for £205 on 14 February 1760 [rec. 15 Feb. 1760, NHPD 61:14]. He may have been the William Wallis of Epping, yeoman who sold to Samuel Parsons, joiner of Epping, land in Gilmanton originally granted to Jonathan Penyman of Exeter, hatter, deceased, which Wallis bought of Capt. Samuel Folsom on 24 June 1762. That deed was dated 5 May 1763 and recorded on 12 February 1765/66 [NHPD 79:474]. If so, he was right back and he and his son as William Wallas and William Wallas, Jr. both of Greenland, yeomen, sold for £500 to William Berry of Greenland, sold 7 1/2 acres on 23 February 1764 [rec. 24 Feb. 1764, NHPD 72:168, one of the witnesses was William Blasdell].
William's land transactions continue. He sold with son William Wallis, Jr. 32 acres to Ichabod Weeks of Greenland, physician on 7 May 1767. On this deed, Alice (as Ellis) releases her dower, but Martha doesn't, which might indicate that she was dead by then. Although, it should be noted that Martha never releases dower on any deed. [NHPD 89:421]. On 29 March 1771, William Wallis of Greenland, yeoman sold to Josiah, Phineas, John and Joshua Weeks of Greenland 2 acres in Greenland which belonged to the Weeks Grant and 5 acres which he bought of Joseph Weeks, deceased. [NHPD 90:384]. On 16 April 1767 William Wallis of Greenland, yeoman sold to William Blazdel of Greenland yeoman, 10 acres in Greenland. [rec. 6 Apr 1770, NHPD 97:366]. It should be noted that previous to that on 22 Jul 1759, William Blasdell of Greenland, yeoman sold to William Walls of Greenland, husbandman, 11 acres in Greenland where Blasdell lived (for the sum of £500). These two deeds are no doubt between William and his son-in-law although no specific relationship is mentioned. [NHPD 91:79]. On 1 July 1771, William Wallas and William Blasdel, both of Greenland, yeomen sold to William Wallas, Jr. of Greenland, 20 acres in Greenland, described in part as "to the northeast End of the farm that Mr. William Wallace gave to his Son Joseph Wallas and to this daughter Blasdel said twenty acres to lie on the East side of the land given to Abigail Blasdel adjoining to Joseph Wallas's land." [Rockingham Co. Deeds 112:156]. Lastly, William deeded land to his other daughter, Jane on 9 October 1762
On 6 June 1734, Joshua Brackett and his wife sued Samuel Weeks, Jr., William Wallis, Mary Woody, and Samuel Triggs, claiming right to 20 acres granted by Greenland to the late Leonard Weeks which Weeks had sold to Wallis, Woody and Triggs. [N.H. Provincial Court Case #15120] This case includes the will and probate papers of Leonard Weeks and its conclusion is not clear. One can see a strong relationship between Wallis and the Weeks family who were obviously his neighbors. Efforts to fit Martha (---) Wallis into the Weeks, Triggs, or Woody families have failed.
William's will calls himself a yeoman of Greenland and mentions sons Samuel and William; daughters Jean Moses, Martha Scaggel and Abigail Blazdal; grandsons Joseph Wallis, Waymouth Wallis, Nathaniel Wallis, and Fernald Wallis; son-in-law William Blazdell husband of daughter Abigail. Son-in-law William Blazdell and grandson Joseph Wallis were named executors.
