The
Diary of James M. Sherburne
1859
James M. Sherburne lived on Sherburne
Hill Road in Epsom. The house and land was originally
Moses property, and passed through marriage into
the Sherburne line. The diary is primarily what
the weather is, day book information (that is items
bought, sold and bartered), visitors to the house
and who went to church on Sunday. Much of the daybook
information is hard to understand, but the use of
dr and cr for credit and debtor are used. There
are some marriages and deaths included. During this
time, there was no 'Gossville' or store, and the
view from the hill would have been sparse compared
to just a few years later. He mentions some of those
who preached on Sunday, and refers to the Free Will
Baptist Church as 'Willey' or 'Willer'. Anything
in ( ) is not from the diary. Some items that could
not be read were left out or a ___ added in its
place. Most of the odd spellings were retained.
